iOS 17 Will Support iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus, Counterclaims Reputable Leaker

Apple’s iOS 17 operating system will be compatible with all iPhones that are capable of running iOS 16, claims a previously reliable source with alleged contacts within Apple, contradicting yesterday’s rumor.

iOS 17 Icon Mock Feature Feature
On Tuesday, a separate source with a good track record for predicting the general release window of upcoming Apple software updates suggested that iOS 17 will drop support for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, while iPadOS 17 will drop support for the first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and fifth-generation iPad.

However, in direct response to the claim about iOS 17 dropping support for the above iPhone models, a reputable leaker has asserted otherwise, saying that it is “simply incorrect.” According to a post on the MacRumors forum by an anonymous tipster, all iPhones that support iOS 16 will indeed support iOS 17, including all devices powered by A11 chipsets (i.e. the iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus).

This counterclaim comes from the same leaker that last year accurately revealed the presence of the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro models ahead of their official launch. More recently they also claimed that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will use a new ultra-low energy chip allowing the new volume, power, and “Action” solid-state buttons to remain functional when the handset is powered off or out of battery, and that iOS 17 will include a new sensitivity setting for said buttons.

This source is said to have a “man inside” Apple’s development team who occasionally reveals hardware details about upcoming iPhone models if the physical features require software development to complement them.

If their latest claim is accurate, it would not be the first time that Apple has maintained the same list of compatible devices between major iOS releases. For example, iOS 15 is compatible with all devices that can run iOS 14, although some iOS 15 features are not available on older iPhones. In contrast, iOS 16 dropped support for some older devices, including the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the ‌iPhone‌ 6s Plus, the iPod touch, and the ‌iPhone‌ 7 and ‌iPhone‌ 7 Plus.

It is also worth noting that yesterday’s rumor was not the first time it has been suggested that iOS 17 could drop support for the iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus. The argument does make logical sense because these models are now five years old – an elapsed timeframe previously used by Apple to drop software support for some earlier devices. They are also the only iPhones powered by the A11 chip, which is vulnerable to a bootrom jailbreaking exploit that Apple is unable to patch. However, whether Tuesday’s rumor was the result of pure extrapolation along these lines remains unknown.

Unless the latest rumor by our anonymous forum tipster is corroborated by another source within the next two months, we will simply have to wait until June 5 to learn if it is true, as this is the date that Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 at WWDC.

Apple unveiled four new iPhones during a press event on Wednesday, along with three new Apple Watches, an updated AirPods Pro and a feature that could save lives when cell service isn’t available.

Here’s a closer look:

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus: Apple fans can now buy a larger-sized iPhone without paying the Pro price. The new iPhone 14 (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches) feature longer battery life, the same chip as last year’s iPhone 13 Pro model (the A15) and a new camera system, including a 12 MP main camera with bigger pixels, a faster aperture and improved sensors. Other features: front-camera autofocus capabilities; a new action mode that lets users keep videos stable while moving; and the removal of the physical SIM card, opting instead for a digital, “e-SIM” card.

Cost: iPhone 14 starts at $799 and the larger iPhone 14 Plus model starts at $899. Colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple and Product Red.

iPhone 14 Pro: Apple’s premium iPhone line redesigned the polarizing notch in favor of a pill-shaped one. Inside holds the true-depth camera, and includes a brand new feature that Apple is calling “dynamic island,” for interactive widgets on your lock screen and access to music controls, timer and other features. The models will come in four colors: space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

AirPods Pro 2: The latest wireless earbuds have a longer-lasting battery, feature a button at the bottom of the case that alerts you to its location and improved and dynamic noise-cancellation technology. Cost: $249; hits stores on Friday.

Three new Apple Watches:

Apple Watch Ultra ($799): The high-end smartwatch is designed for outdoor enthusiasts. Think deep sea scuba divers and triathletes. It features a brighter display, is more water resistant, comes with an advanced compass and gets 60 hours of use time.

Meanwhile, the Series 8 — which starts at $399 for the GPS model and $499 for cellular — narrows in on women’s health, with revamped period cycle tracking tools that can predict ovulation. It can also detect when a user has been in a car crash.

The Apple Watch SE, which starts at $249 for GPS models and $299 for cellular, also features crash detection technology and is faster than the previous model.

Satellite connectivity: Emergency SOS via Satellite could be a lifesaver for people needing to communicate when off the grid. By pointing an iPhone 14 toward a satellite in the sky, which the phone will help locate, users will be able to send and receive information to get emergency help even if cell service isn’t working.

Everything New in the iOS 16 Photos and Camera Apps https://smilihome.com/everything-new-in-the-ios-16-photos-and-camera-apps/ https://smilihome.com/everything-new-in-the-ios-16-photos-and-camera-apps/#respond Mon, 22 Aug 2022 20:50:35 +0000 https://smiliphone.com/?p=3673

Almost all of Apple’s main built-in iPhone apps were updated with new features in iOS 16, including both the Photos and Camera apps. ‌Photos‌ has quite a few new features including an option to get rid of duplicates and some locked folders for sensitive photos, plus the Camera app can translate text and there are functionality improvements for iPhone 13 users.

iOS 16 Photos and Camera Guide Feature

This guide aggregates everything that’s new in ‌iOS 16‌ in both the Camera and ‌Photos‌ apps. Many of these features are also available in iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura.

Photos

Locked Hidden and Recently Deleted Albums

In the ‌iOS 16‌ ‌Photos‌ app, both the “Hidden” and “Recently Deleted” albums under Utilities are locked with Face ID or Touch ID and cannot be opened without biometric authentication or a passcode.

photos locked albums ios 16

This protects the photos that you’ve deleted or those that you’ve marked as hidden. Someone who has access to your unlocked phone will not be able to open these albums without further authentication.

There is no option not to lock these two albums as it is a system level lock that cannot be overwritten. There continues to be an option to hide the Hidden album, however.

Duplicates Detection

In ‌iOS 16‌, your ‌iPhone‌ will automatically detect any duplicate images that you have in your ‌Photos‌ app. Duplicate photos will show up in a “Duplicates” album under Utilities in ‌Photos‌, giving you the opportunity to merge them to save space and reduce clutter.

ios 16 duplicates

The Duplicates album only shows up if you have photo duplicates in your library, and the merging feature is intelligent. It will keep the highest detail and the most metadata, creating the best possible image.

If, for example, you have one copy of a photo that’s high resolution and a second copy that has more metadata, the ‌Photos‌ app will combine the best qualities from both photos into a single image.

After updating to ‌iOS 16‌, your ‌iPhone‌ will continually scan for duplicates, so duplicate images may show up over time and may not be available right when the update is installed.

Copy and Paste Edits

If you have multiple photos that you want to edit in the same way, or if you’ve made changes to one photo that you want to replicate in another photo, you can use the new copy and paste edits tools in ‌iOS 16‌.

ios 16 photos copy paste edits

To use the option, make edits to an image and then tap on the three dots icon in the upper right corner. From there, tap on Copy Edits to copy everything that was done to the image. Open up another photo, tap on the three dot icon again, and then choose the Paste Edits feature to get the exact same adjustments.

Undo and Redo Edits

To streamline photo editing, ‌iOS 16‌ adds simple undo and redo buttons, a feature missing in prior versions of iOS. With the undo and redo buttons, you can remove edits that you’ve made to photos one by one rather than having to cancel all of the edits by reverting an image entirely.

ios 16 photos undo redo

The undo and redo buttons are located in the upper left corner of the image editing interface and will show up once you’ve made an edit to a photo using the built-in editing tools in the ‌Photos‌ app. You can undo and/or redo every change individually, making it quicker to go back and correct a mistake.

In prior versions of iOS, you would need to manually change one of the edited parameters back to where you started, or revert changes entirely.

People Album Sorting

In a small but meaningful change, Apple added an option to sort the dedicated People album by name in ‌iOS 16‌. You can open up the People album and tap on the two arrow keys to change the sorting from “Custom Order” to “Name.” Opting for Name rearranges the people in the album into alphabetical order.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

‌iOS 16‌ adds an iCloud Shared Photo Library that’s basically identical to the standard iCloud Photo Library, but shareable with up to five other people.

icloud shared photo library setup

There are a lot of ins and outs to know about with ‌iCloud‌ Shared Photo Library, so we’ve created a dedicated guide on iCloud Shared Photo Library that tells you everything you need to know about setting up the feature and using it with family and friends.

Lift Subject From Background

Though not strictly a ‌Photos‌ app feature, lift subject from background is one of the most fun random additions to ‌iOS 16‌ as it’s a little bit like a mini version of Photoshop. You can use it to pull the subject out of any image or photo.

To use it in the ‌Photos‌ app, open up an image and then long press on the main subject of the photo until it lights up. From there, you can drag it out or choose the “copy” option to copy it to the clipboard. You can paste it into another photo or send it as a sticker in Messages.

Memory Updates

When a video is playing in a memory, tap to restart the video and play it from the beginning while the music continues to play. There are also new memory types for This Day in History and children playing.

‌iOS 16‌ adds a toggle that allows you to prevent Featured ‌Photos‌ and Memories from showing up in For You, ‌Photos‌ Search, and Widgets.

The toggle can be found in the ‌Photos‌ section of the Settings app.

Camera

Foreground Blur in Portrait Photos

When using Portrait mode, you can blur objects in the foreground of an image to get a more realistic-looking depth-of-field effect. This feature is limited to the ‌iPhone 13‌, 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max.

Translate Camera

System wide translation has expanded to the Camera app in ‌iOS 16‌, allowing the ‌iPhone‌’s camera to be used for real-time translation of signs, menus, packaging, and more.

ios 16 translate camera

Just open up the Camera app and point it at the text that you want to translate. Tap on the text selection button to select detected text, and then tap on the translate option to get an instant translation.

The view can be paused to get translations overlaid on text, letting you zoom in for a closer look. It’s similar to the Translate camera feature that the Google Translate app has long offered, and it’s convenient for when you just need a quick translation but don’t want to snap a photo.

Improved Quality for Cinematic Mode

On the ‌iPhone 13‌ models, the Cinematic mode video recording feature is more accurate in ‌iOS 16‌. It has a better depth-of-field effect for profile angles and around the edges of hair and glasses.

iPhone 14 Display Production Weighted Most Toward Pro Max Model, Least Toward Max Model https://smilihome.com/apple-unveils-an-all-new-lock-screen-experience-and-new-ways-to-share-and-communicate-in-ios-16/ https://smilihome.com/apple-unveils-an-all-new-lock-screen-experience-and-new-ways-to-share-and-communicate-in-ios-16/#respond Mon, 22 Aug 2022 20:10:23 +0000 https://smiliphone.com/?p=3669

The new 6.7-inch non-pro “iPhone 14 Max” could be in shorter supply than some of the other ‌iPhone 14‌ models, according to to display panel shipment and production estimates that were provided today by display analyst Ross Young.

iPhone 14 Dummies 1 Feature

In the period between June and September, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the highest share of panel production, comprising 28 percent of shipments. The ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ are close behind at 26 percent each, but the ‌iPhone 14‌ Max trails behind at 19 percent. Production numbers are similar with the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max accounting for 29 percent of production and the 14 Max accounting for 21 percent of production.

Young says that ‌iPhone 14‌ Max display panel shipments will “make up a lot of ground in September,” which suggests that any initial supply issues at launch should clear up quickly.

During the ‌iPhone 14‌ development cycle, there were rumors that the new 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ Max that replaces the 5.4-inch iPhone mini was behind schedule due to lockdowns and production issues. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said at the time that suppliers would work overtime to catch up and that we could see little impact on device availability.
